Hi all! It is possible a care guide has been posed on the feather fin catfish before however I did not see one so I decided to make one as they are one of my favorite fish! This will be a basic care guide on them however if you have any questions about them be sure to let me know! This is based on personal experience as well as what I have personally researched.

Minimum Tank size: 55 gallon
Common names: Feather fin squeaker, feather fin catfish, synodontis catfish, ect.
Size: 8-9” (however they have been known or grow larger)
Temperament: semi-aggressive
Lifespan: 10-20 years
Temperature: 72-78 degrees
Scientific name: Synodontis eupterus
Diet: omnivore (feed sinking pellets and shrimp)

I personally have four synodontis catfish, they are a fun and unique species and very fun to keep. They appreciate protein rich foods, I personally use massivore delight pellets.

EDIT: Apparently some of what I wrote did not save so here it is re-written:

This species is a great fish for almost any cichlid tank that has the room. Very fun fish to keep with lots of personality!

I hope this helps anyone looking to get one of these catfish and if you have any questions be sure to let me know!

We need pictures! lol

Nice write up. Been looking at adding one of these to a tank.

Ok, when I go down to do water changes today I will take some pictures!

55 might be a bit small and could increase aggression

Mine also likes zucchini

FYI……. Massivore is designed for carnivores, it is extremely high in both protein and fat and something that would be best fed sparingly, if at all, to this species of syno.

IMO Celebrist is probably right on a 208 liter not being enough. Featherfins can get up to 30 cm and can get feisty if they don't have space to call their own, so I wouldn't keep one in anything smaller than a 183 cm long 473 liter long term (this also lines up with Practical Fishkeeping's 6x the length rule!).

Welcome! A photo would help greatly. Lacking it, I suppose LLE lateral line erosion disease, which occurs in synodontis eupterus usually because of not enough plant / green matter in their diet. Need pellets that contain algae in them.

Yet to see a eupterus over 9” in captivity but agree that a 55 would be a minimum for a solitary fish and that’s 55 ukg not usg and is really a grow on tank.
Like many synodontis they can strip a planted tank quite effectively so plant matter should certainly be part of their diet.
