Hello everyone I have been planning a plywood tank for a couple of months now but I'm still wondering about a few ideas. I need your feedback on an idea of mine which consists of a sump return via a spray bar on the bottom of my tank. I want it to work like a rfug but my idea is to not use substrate but styrofoam to cover the spraybar kind of like the diy foam backgrounds on here. By design there will be numerous dead spots in the tank. So I plan to encorporate a large powerhead with two or three outlets to blow around whats not covered by the spraybar. Any and all feedback on this idea is greatly appreciated. thanks

If you use a sump to power the jets you will want to make sure you have an air break just below the surface of the water to prevent back siphoning. Otherwise if you have a power loss you could siphon the tank out through the jets into the sump. You could also use soft tubing and spray nozzles like those for plant watering systems, just the high flow variety, to make the placements of your jets easier based on your drawings. Whatever you do, unless you have a check valve you rust immensly, do not plumb the jets through the bottom of the tank. Oh, and yes 1/2" should be fine at 36".
