this may be a stupid question, but im looking to breed a fish for feeders, i know guppies breed like rabbits and so do convicts, but covicts are out of the question because i cant find them around here at all. are there any other fish that breed very quickly. and if i do go with guppies is there anything special i have to do or is it just put in a dozen or so and wait.

Guppies Are most likely best. Convicts have dorsal spines, I'm not sure how well your pet will like them. If you want to breed guppies, yea, just get a dozen or so and wait.Put a lot of plants in the tank, fake or real. This will provide cover for the fry. Seems like 70% of the time you'll get a pregnant female anyway, just pick a fat one. You could also try a breeder net and throw the fattest girl inside until she pops, then pull her out and feed the babies finely crushed flakefood if you want to grow them. I Breed guppies in little sterilite or rubbermaid tubs to feed them to my koi for fun. Good luck

used to have a tank for males and females, and then 1 more for the "love room". Once they do the deed move the dad back, once the mom drops move her back... presto! dinner!

you could try goldfish as well.
they give a lot of eggs and the fry too grow fast.

i thought it was hard to breed gold fish. i was told you need a pair that three years old and have to mess with the water a lot.

i just get a pair of goldfish which are about 6'' in size and throw them in my green water tank.
a few days later the tank is full of fry and the parents are returned to the LFS and exchanged for something else.
each batch of goldfish lasts for about 1 month.

don't bother breeding fish for feeders, just buy them and get them shipped to yourself.- i use these guys http://aquaticfoods.com/Feedergoldfish.html

haveing a breeding operation ussally take a good amount of tank space, and isn't always reliable. besides also being time consuming and expensive.

and these are for all fish in breeding, there's alot more entitled than you'd think, even for guppies.

I've got guppies right now for piranha food. I had a pregnant female that had about 25 babies (of which 20 are still alive). Mom is no longer with us, but they fry are getting pretty big and should have babies of their own in a month or so. Having a breeding operation might be slow, but it's also fun to watch. I spend as much time in front of my 10g guppy tank as the 75g piranha tank.

I hate to argue, But I don't think 6'' goldfish can breed can they? I thought goldfish had to be 2-3 years old? Back on topic though, I breed guppies in a big plastic pretzel tub. 2 males and like 8 or more females. When the females square off, I put them in a smaller tub till they pop, then put them through a screen to catch the mom and let the fry fall. Big females can drop like 50 fry. I feed them to my koi for fun.
