Do convict cichlids make good feeder fish? Comets are awful for them, of course, but how about cichlids? I would assume they are a little healthier for them..

If i feed live, i usually use convicts. Theyre easy to breed and if you raise them yourself then you know that they arent parasite ridden or diseased. Make sure to gut load them with healthy pellets or food right before you feed to your piranhas.

yeah that is the exact reason I'm asking. I used to own convicts and they would breed like crazy. So why not breed and have a constant, healthy supply of food??

Does anyone else breed their own live feeders??

Why not try the healthiest option that u can buy? Get ur p on a good pellet, NLS or omega 1 make good products. Then offer healthy feeders as a treat if u like. Many of us use pellets as a staple and other supplements as treats like shrimp, talapia etc.

It may take a week or more of starving before they accept them but its worth it, they go months without, colors and health will pop. Don't feed for 5 days and throw on some pellets. Then offer daily pellets

Completely agree. I use pieces of whole fish and pellets as the staple of my piranha diets, and then salmon, worms, leaches, smelt, shrimp, and convicts are the treats. The biggest thing to remember about breeding your own feeders is that they take time to grow. Get something like a 20long with a breeding pair of convicts, then some tens to raise the fry til feeding time.

Some lfs lady said kois and goldfish feeders are the same. I tend to disagree. What do you guys think.

yes i meant the live as being a treat. I always feed and have fed my piranhas the staple diet of shrimp and tilapia and have seen excellent results.

Pretty sure koi are some type of carp, either way already red flag goes up, don't buy feeders from there, your risking the health of ur rbp, all it takes is one bad infested feeder and bam, goodbye rbp.....
