So everything I've read online includes warnings of feeder fish and the diseases they carry. I only give Gary, my senegal, feeders once in a while and I make sure I grab the healthiest rosie reds I can find. However, I'm interested in buying a needlefish and from what I've read they prefer mainly a diet of live food (also they can be trained off but still...). I don't have an extra tank (or room for one) to set up a quarantine tank to preview the feeders before hand so how would I feed my needle live fish effectively?

I work at an lfs, and they will usually accept thawed krill.

my pike characin will take nothing but live. best you can do is quarantine. I keep a couple different feeder tanks going at different stages. to be sure, an ick cycle can last 30 days.

re: your senegal. mine is 4 years old now and has never taken feeders. the first 4 months he actually ate flake then moved to meal worms and frozen meaty stuff.

My senegal loves feeders but I don't give them to him much. I put them in and I can count on 1-2 being missing when I wake up in the morning. I've gotten him on pellets and he gets frozen beef heart too

I give my fish the occassional feeders. The best thing you can do is ask the lfs what they are feeding them. That'll give you an idea of whether you can give them live feeders or not.

get a 10 gallon tank with just a bubbler 1 male guppy 2 female set breeder grass in there and watch the fry come... guppys are so easy to breed and are hardy healthy fish i never buy live feeders anywhere...u wont need filtration just water changes or a small sponge in line with your bubbler

live feeders are ok but not on a regular basis maybe twice a month as my guppy fry become meaty enough... live fish bind smaller fish and arnt really that good of a source of protein compared to other more digestable foods... i always recomend feeding algea spirulina flake to any fish that will take it and get him of the proteins on a constant basis it will take off of his longevity and even his color

breeding your own feeders is the only way to ensure a healthy, disease free meal.

Or an extensive quarantine, but if you don't have the tank to quarantine, you won't have the tank to breed either..

even an extensive QT still doesn't 100% ensure that the fish is going to be disease free, breeding your own also allows you to provide them with nutritious foods that will in turn make them more nutritious for your fish.
