Hey I've heard and even read on some posts that feeding LMB (or any fish for that matter) feeder gold fish is not very good. So far I've heard they are oily and fatty. Why is that bad for the fish and are there other cautions or do some of you think its totally okay.

Feeder gold fish?????...........Let me know your thoughts.

feeder gold fish should be fed to nothing..hence their lfs called name...they are deceased infested fish high in fat

what is their LFS name?

You said deceased(dead) infested, I assume you meant diseased infested, what types of diseases do they have?

and is a high in fat fish a bad thing for fish to eat?

High in fat is bad for anything generally

They are usually not house properly, stressed, starving and sick.

Healthier foods are baitfish, worms, crickets, shrimp, and frozen silversides.

I would avoid baitfish as well. Many of them are treated just as poorly as goldfish. If they're wild caught they may have disease/parasites and if they are raised on farms the farms likely treat them like they would goldfish. Also, fatheads are commonly sold as baitfish, and though alright as treats they also have a high fat content and also contain thiamase (sp?). Generally speaking, coldwater/temperate fish aren't that good as feeder fish, mostly because they contain more fat. And before someone else mentions it, yes...I know LMB are also coldwater/temperate fish but in an aquarium setting their bodies process things differently so a diet high in fat should be avoided. Tropical fish would be best. Home raised livebearers (guppy, mollies, platies) or easy to raise cichlids (convicts) would work.

Thats good info......thanks.

I do keep hearing people say and reading on post that gold fish have diseases, but I have yet for anyone to tell me of these diseases.

Anyone know what types of diseases they have?

There is a wide range of diseases/parasites that could come with the feeder fish. My LWM has fish with ich all the time. In other places I see fungus. In others the fish have clamped fins.
