Feeder Turtles!

But, the fish might be harmed, that is the whole point. There are plenty of safe foods out there that a fish keeper should never have to risk feeding something to their pet that might harm or kill them. It just doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Is being a MFKeeper about what you can feed your fish? Or about the fish you keep themselves?


Keeping cool and monsterous fish has nothing to do with what you can give your fish and have it digest. It has to deal with the size, mass, and attitude of the fish you keep. Furthermore I see no need to expand what people normally feed as "feeders" when beyond that point there are so many non-live foods that are better for the health and welfare of the fish. I'm not sure at which point your fish's life has any more value than an other creature on the earth whether it be a tiny frog, a turtle or a goldfish. People feeding these animals are probably the same that will argue with the kid who has an oscar in a 20gallon.

People with this biased opinion that love their fish but don't care about the welfare of other creatures or not that makes me not want to keep fish sometimes. The frogs and turtles will probably end up as feeders if not for your fish than a human or other animal. But nature is nature and there's a difference between what goes on in this world thats wrong and what goes on thats wrong and you support or think it's ok for some hypocritical reason. And don't use the "it happens in nature" response because you can't replicate nature in a glass box filled with water and artifical lighting.
 
soft shell or not -

sounds like it would be difficult and even problematic to feed due to the digestion of the shell, bones, and nails, etc.

question to ask is...IS IT WORTH THE RISK?!?!?
 
I don't think u are supposed to feed them to fish :screwy: they sound like a specialty feeder to me like for a exotic snake or lizard that eats those exclusivly and are no other alternatives did u ask the lfs dude what if any paticular critter is supposed to eat turtles?:nilly:

lol in the wild they dont have pellets lol

its nature,and always will be,tank or wild.
you cant train every fish to eat pellets :D
 
Insects/ Worms ok.
Feeder fish ok.
Feeder frogs ok.
But feeder turtles?!!!

I totally disagree with this making feeders out of turtles, first of all turtles are cute to be a food for a monster fish. Second, just as Gr8KarmaSF said it could cause some problems for the monster fish maybe in the future. Third, turtles (whatever species you have there)maybe endangered species.

It's better if your LFS sell them as pets.
 
There are many IFS and DEPENDS on this topic.

-Are the turtles farm raised or wild caught.
-Are the turtles raised in ethical and humane conditions.
-Are the shells to hard to digest and are the turtles nutritional.
-Are the turtles part of a common or depleting species.
-Do the turtles carry disease that could harm our monsters.

Depending on the answers to the above, is the answer to the debate.
Someone needs to do research to answer all of these questions before we get tied down in debates and arguments...
 
That does sound like a specialty feeder to me although for what I don't know. I couldn't feed a turtle to a fish, or a mouse for that matter but that's just me it doesn't necessarily mean that it's unethical. Look at how many animals are feeders to us humans -- being prepackaged really takes the bite out of what we don't see.

I've kept numerous wild caught fish, all ate non-live...


I didn't say they have pellets in the wild, but you keeping them in a glass box filled with water isn't exactly replicating their wild setting..


If we are making some creatures lives unimportant and acceptable to be used as food for pets then what keeps your fish from being used as feeders for the other pets you or someone else may keep.. My dog likes fish, does that mean you'll fry up your bass and send them my way?


Saying feeding live food is "bad ass" makes you sound like a 16 y/o piranha keeper who thinks they're the baddest fish in the world and sticks a feeder way bigger than the fish can handle in the tank just to try to prove they're cool.

If you think feeding live is what makes the fish you keep badass then you are keeping fish for the wrong reasons. I know many fish that don't eat live and are "bad ass" just the same..
