Our spiny eels absolutely love red wiggler earthworms (scientific name Eisenia fetida I think)... We go through approximately 200 of these worms a week, and buying them in small packages is getting very expensive. Has anyone here successfully tried growing their own worms? I'm not sure how many worms I would need in order to for reproduction to keep their numbers high enough to make up for removing 200 per week for food purposes. Also, what type of setup would be best? Anyone have any advice? Thanks a bunch!

Build a large wooden box, ~48x24x10". Drill 1.5" holes in the front, and staple some screen mesh on the inside. Spray the inside black with a rust inhibiting paint. Fill it with peat moss, and keep it very moist. Make sure there is a good lid. Place on an angle so that the water can drain out. Stir it daily, and add corn meal or fish flakes daily. Around 100 in the box should yield enough for your needs, but it can take a while to get that setup working well. I had a smaller box, and I yielded ~100 a week. Also make sure that it is kept in a darker area, that is not hot, and not freezing. I suggest watering the box at night.

I have a worm box that does well:headbang2 i went to wal-mart got a big tub 15 gal filled it with shreded paper i bought some nightcrawlers in the sporting depatment 2.88$ for 24:naughty: .I got 100 to start the box soak the shreds of paper first then add worms i add some bread scraps chip crumbs and other table scraps once a week NO MEAT and mist and add water as needed and in about 60-90 days u will start to see small worms and then u can start culling them.lol:grinno:

Wow I've never really considered something like this--great idea! How's the nutritional value of the worms?

Thanks so much! I have considered buying in bulk, but either way, I will need a good set up to keep them alive. I hope it works, because the eels are always hungry :-)
