ive got a 6 inch long nose gar that will only accept live foods. what else could i eventually ween it onto. its kind of a pain running back and fourth from the pet store

starve him when he gets bigger say like 8" or so and throw in only pellets and he will eventually start to take em, then you can start feeding other things as well
good luck
:D

From your previous post I'm not sure you have a Longnosed (Lepisosteus osseus) but this should not matter food wise.

Gars will regularly take a variety of foods one just needs to have patience and commitment to training them. Starving is not an option for any first year fish and I would highly advise against it. these fish need to grow and they need to grow fast. Just keep feeding it live if it will only take live but always offer something else first and limit the live feed. The idea is to keep the fish hungry but not starved.

A drop feeding method works best with finicky fish this technique is well written here: Dropfeeding

How often do you go to the petshop?

I go once or twice a week and buy enough rosies for the week plus one or two and when he eats the last one then the next day I get more.

you could also try bugs from a pond or backyard.?

i have gator that is 10inches and eats everything , pelets, mussels, prawns
and yesterday a frog:D
