I just got a Violet Goby and cannot get it to eat. I was told he would eat shrimp pellets, but he will not eat them so I was wondering what else to feed them.
What is the size? At smaller sizes they are very restricted in meal size as mouth is huge but throat is very small. I started mine with bloodworms and brine shrimp, both frozen. He did just fine with that.
I feed mine frozen bloodworms. When I tried to feed frozen brine shrimp, he would filter them out through his gills. He also eats algae. In the wild algae is a big part of their diet, so it may or may not be important for their long-term health. In all four of the bottom corners of my tank, there are big clean spots where he's eaten the algae off the wall. He can't reach any higher than an inch or two, and if he tried to eat off of the flat wall he would slide one way or the other.
I actually found that when my dragon gobys weren't eating, I would take some frozen brine shrimp, or frozen blood worm cubes and defrost them in the microwave for 15 seconds in a cup. Afterwards dip the cup in the water fill it half way and then pour it out in the tank they would scour the ground until they had sniffed it all out.
Mine likes it when I thaw his food too. I just leave the bloodworm cube floating in a small cup of water from the tank, and stir it a little bit before pouring it into the tank. He turns into a vaccuum and all of the other fish go into a feeding frenzy.
Usually shrimp pellets will be taken when they get used to them, they're usually too tough for them to eat, if you were to soak them until they were soft, they'd be easier to eat.
My Violet Goby goes nuts over bloodworms. If he is hiding under his rock the moment I drop the bloodworms in he is out and feeding like crazy. He's my favorite fish in the tank.
