I just watched a vid of a 22" Arowana eating a live mouse.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gQiRdh9Sac

I have an 18" Spotted Gar, he currently eats live fish.
I have been told (from where i bought him) that they will take live baby ducks and such.

Is this really a good idea?
What food is best for him?
Wouldn't the blood / fur / feathers / etc taint the water or harm the other fish?

I'm just interested. Not about to throw some hairy / feathered critters in my tank, yet.

It is not healthy. It will wreak havoc on your fish's digestive system.

Thanks.

I thought it was a bad idea but that vid made me wonder.

If anybody knows of any specific fish Gars prefer or fish that are good for them, pls let me know. I have been giving him different fish from time to time to give him a change of diet.

no, it does not do anything for the fish. most of the protein is not useable by the fish and your gar will only waste energy eating and digesting it. not to mention a live mouse can permanately harm your gar. people who do it because they think it's "cool" need to get themselves checked...there shouldn't be anything amusing, life affirming or even remotely entertaining about watching a defenceless animal die an unnecessarily painful death without a just cause..

good that you're skipping this idea. i would go with a mixture of shrimp, whole fish and pellets
