I'm new to overflows...anyone have a trick to stop pellets and other floating foods from quickly getting lost in the overflow during feeding? I'm sure I'll hear turn off the sump but id rather not do that

Maybe you could diy a prefilter and put it over your overflow. You could get some plastic mesh and use suction cups to keep it in place in front of the overflow. I think the plastic mesh would catch most of the pellets but still allow the small debris to flow into the overflow.

I'm using fly screen at the moment, and it's a real nuisance. it gets clogged way too quickly with java moss and food and and just general debris.
Try soaking your food to make it sink faster like the others have said.
I've managed to find a quiet spot in my tank that when I drop food there, it doesnt get sucked around by the current.

I just use sinking pellets now. I have some leftover floaters that I just drop a couple at a time

I've only recently run into this problem myself. Some of my fish prefer feeding on the floaters and some prefer the sinkers. Have you thought about a feeder ring? Anybody here use one?

I presoak some foods and for others I have 2 minute and 5 minute feed timers built into my tanks with overflows. Automatically turns back on.

I have remote controls on a few others.
