I have about a 8 inch silver aro and was wondering about how much food is the right amount for him. I give him a variety of stuff. Crickets, mealworms, small earthworms and small prawn with the heads removed. For instance about how many crickets should I give him at once the store rates them as medium size they are probably about 1/3in or so. The prawn tails are about 1/2in. He is a real eating machine and seems to be no end to his appetite. I dont want to overfeed him or underfeed him either. Any thoughts?

Your best bet is to feed a series of small meals throughout the day. You want to feed your aro until you see a little bulge on his belly...but not a "ready-to-burst" bulge.

Make sure you get your crickets at least a day before you feed because you'll want to gut-load them first. You can also enhance your prawn tails with vitamins as well.

feed untill they stop

weird, i never see a bulge in the jardiniis stomach, though it eats 8 to 10 pieces of shrimp a day! in one sitting!
but my silver eats 3 small pieces, its only 5 inches or less. its weird, it will swallow pieces bigger than its own head
its the first time i hvae seen that lol
other silver aro that i have had will abandon the food if its toooo big, this one forces it in! its with other carnivores, probably why.... but my jardinii will abandon small pieces if its not the best shape .... very picky, the silver aro will swallow pieces bigger than its head. sometimes it keeps it in its mouth for hours!

feed untill they stop eating:D
if you want to regulate growth, feed once a day. but by nature, they are not meant to be regulated in terms of growth

:iagree:
I feed small meals 3-4 times a day.
Watch the bulge in their belly when it's get's flat, I feed them. Keep the variety / types of food up and GL....I use Seachem's "vitality" and Infant liquid drop vitamins on most of there food.

Is this your first silver arowana?

Nope I had a 18incher before that I adopted from someone that I got up to about 26in. Fish was very mistreated in a 55g tank. Had some back arch and gill curl that was so far advanced I had to do the trimming surgery on him which was a success after about 8 months his gills had grown back perfectly.(If anyone needs info on how to perform this procedure I would be glad to explain in more detail). I had to fight for over a year to get this guy back into good health. But never had a baby aro before and I dont want to make mistakes and for him to be mistreated like my first one.

i just got my first aro at about 2 inches and ive got him to eat very little cichlid pellets and frozen mysis and bloodworms and small pieces of tore up krill.
