Feeding Beef Heart?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
No need at all. Fish are not equipped to digest mammalian protein.

Just do a search in mfk. You will find tons of info.

I feed raw ground beef to my oscar once a month.........

It's more a derivative of what they 'normally' obtain in the wild, so that in effect, they have evolved making use of certain foods. Fish often come across insects, insect larvae, algae, other fish, and depending on the species, many more odd things like small birds, clams, shrimp, small monkeys, nuts, and fruit, to name a few.

Bloodworms are a marine species, and one may ask if fresh water fish (which descended from marine fish) have retained some ability to use bloodworms as a proper food source.

However, for most fish, mammal flesh is inappropriate on many levels, including fat content, digestability and probably specific proteins (i.e., amino acids.) There are simply many alternatives.

Bloodworms a marine species? The bloodworms we feed are not the same as the marine species. The ones we feed fish are midge fly larvae and are from fresh water pools.

Blackworms are better and you can get them live pretty cheap. They will live great in tanks until they are taken out by fish. I cultured them for years in 20 gallon tanks with sponge filters. Keeping them in fridge works too but they need more maintenance then.

So are they ok or not? I've looked around and can't find black worms anywhere. Is it ok to feed freshwater fish saltwater organisms such as shrimp and saltwater fish?

Good to feed freshwater organisms saltwater organisms, but not the other way around. Search for california blackworms online there are lots of sellers. My lfs carries them, if you cant find one that does then ask them to order them for you special. Most major distributors carry them nowadays.
