Amongst the Catfish & Plecos
So I was thinking about building a water reservoir and potentially growing some crayfish in it to add into my giant kittyfishies' diet. Any thoughts on it such as potential dangers of the shell and claws? Or, perhaps potential puking after eating the shell on crustacean?

I just throw whole live crayfish into my bichir tank, the fish take care of the rest lol. I've heard it's wise to cut the claws off to prevent any damage to the fish, but my bichirs hit the crays so hard and violently I doubt it matters much. And the catfish are even better eaters, depending on their size I'd feed them crays as nature intended.

I suggest you use marble crayfish. This self cloning crayfish is the perfect feeder and because they are all female and reproduce on their own, you will have plenty of juvenile crayfish to feed to your cats. Juveniles are a lot easier on fish to eat. GL!

Thanks guys. That would be so nice to cut down on the cost of feeding a little. Yeah, I'd probably like to stick with the smaller guys so as to minimize and damage. I can't imagine they won't land a pretty deadly though. Do you know if the marble crayfish are cold water? I'm gonna need to do some research on crayfish species.

i fed crayfish to my big cats...i just dropped them in the tank claws and all...never had any issues with them...they cleanned up any scrapes while the cats snacked on them one by one till they were all gone...then i would add more...i think i ended up with rusty crayfish, but idk on the sp. i will see if i have a vid of them in with the cats...i know i have a vid with them in with my gar and they were the same sp....you could get them as they worked in the 86f of my tank...

you can see the crayfish in amungsted the decor...this is from sept. of '09'...they had been eatting crays for a while along with sunfish and bullheads...

nice designs!!!

dont wory about feeding crays to ur fish expecialy if u have cats they have tough mouths and a cray wont to do any damage. if ur still woried, rip off the claws and feed those separetly or just feed molted crays that just shed their skin theyre realy soft and squishy just like worms almost. i fed my 6 inch lmb a 2 inch cray without claws no prob :grinno:
