I know there is some debate on the nutrition of these meaty foods to omnivore and especially herbivore cichlids, what all do you guys do in regards to feeding your fish, currently I do flake and spirulina. should I supplement with shrimp and worms every now and then or is this not desired for African cichlids

i start with frozen blood worms and move to pellets and market shrimp and fresh fish when larger .. i like the growth rate i get with frozen blood worms while they are small

Cooked market shrimp is always a treat. Whenever I have some left over I drop a few in the main tank, the fish go crazy!

It's great to vary any fish's diet as much as possible as long as it is healthy. I feed my green terror both blood worms and krill. But then again he is not a malawi/mbuna. And Malawi/mbuna are notoriously prone to malawi bloat so in your case stick with New life spectrum pellets and blanched veggies, every great once in a while, blood worms are alright but definitely not as a staple.

What kind of trouble?
Impaction? To the OP,it depends on which types you have.

I would stay away from those proteins with almost every African Cichlid. There are some species that are very susceptible to bloat.

Stick to a high quality food (NLS, Dainichi, OSI, ect.) and feed veggies as a treat.
