Lately I have been seeing a lot of people posting about feeding saltwater fish fillets to there freshwater fish being healthier due to them being less prone to catching saltwater fish diseases.

How do you guys feel about feeding cichla this? And don't worry, it will not be a staple diet kinda thing just a treat once a week or so (if I can ever get my cichla to take anything but biogold).

all my cichla are eating pieces of frozen shrimp stuffed with carnivore pellets and they love it..

One of my first kelberi used to eat smelt that I would toss into the tank. Not sure if they were any better or worse but he seemed to really like them.

I would not think that any fillet frozen then thawed would pose a problem as far as disease ...Salt fish wild caught would be packed with nutrition especially the head and inerds!!!

I agree with you on the point of the frozen food being disease free and that was never a concern but I have read comments from others that salt water fish foods provide insufficient nutrition for freshwater fish.My kel had no problem with though,he would watch me toss the smelt into the far end of the tank and pounce on it just as it hit the water.

The fish that are used to make fishmeal for pellets are saltwater fish, because freshwater fish can break down in process or storage and lose its vitamen B-1 content, and cause deficiency. So in short yes its fine, but the best diet is a varied diet.

Good info.
