I just got these 2 products OMEGA ONE Super color pellets and Supper Veggie KELP FLAKES and was wondering if any of you have had good results with them? Im trying to give the cichlids a verity. I also have frozen bloodworms and cichlid sticks and regular flake food. I got the veggie b/c I hear they get protein bloat easily? And also read that you are supposed to not feed them 1 day a week. Is this true? If so what for? There is also a black ghost knife in the tank with them that is getting along fine with them for now. I have another tank for it if not, but I specifically feed it the frozen blood worms. Which the cichlids will also eat. So I wont be able to skip a day, and worried of them getting too much protein. Any ideas for me to feed them these foods on a healthy weekly schedule would be appreciated

We have very similar set ups. I have those same foods and feed them a variety as well. Most times, I feed a little flake and a frozen blood worm "cube" (disolved)...then the next time, pellets and brine shrimp, etc. I give them more than one choice and mix it up. This way, I can start to see what they prefer.

I have read several times of Cichlids getting bloat. So far I haven't had any issues. I don't skip days either.

One word of caution...I too had a BGK in with the Cichlids. I was told that he would be very aggressive and not to place him in my Community tanks. Well, that advice would most likely be acceptable a year from now. But, he was actually pretty docile and way too small to be kept with Cichlids. I found him half in, half out of one of my Cichlid's mouth. I was able to remove him, isolated, but still lost him the next day.

By the way, they love frozen peas! Thawed out of course.

Sounds like you're doing everything right :)

Man that sucks about your BGK. I love mine to death. He is a good 6-7" right now. All my ciclids are 1-1 1/2" no more than 2 so it may go the other way around. Tried fish with him in another 55 gal. CORNER type tank and all their eyes were gone in 2 days. Only left 1 pink kisser that has always been with him til now. I hated that fish too and it would never die or get ate lol (wife picked it out)

lmao, again, same thing. I got the pink kisser because my daughter thought it was cute. Its definitely the bully in the community tank. I have a feeling that fish would survive a 3 week power outage and 0 water changes!

i have definitely experienced malawi bloat in giving to high a protein diet but it sounds like you're doing the right thing with the mixture you have. When my yellow lab started showing symptoms I picked up a veggie flake and the issue cleared up an a week or so..

i wouldn't worry too much about skipping a day a week or whatever, I find the if i feed my fish everyday they're hardly interested in the food. I pretty much just gauge their moods to see if they want food. By not feeding everyday they actually devour the food rather than letting it sink.

A lot of folks (including myself) will advise against feeding bloodworms to African cichlids because of bloat issues. It works for some folks so I won't necessarily condemn it.... I just wouldn't ever do it myself. I feed bloodworms to my Gymnogeos, tetras and angels.

My Tangs and Malawian fish get frozen spirolina brineshrimp and frozen krill as supplements to daily NLS pellets and occasional flake.

For all of my adult fish, I only feed them 6 days a week. This gives them a chance to clean out their systems as well as gives the filter a rest.... 8" haps tend to be very messy eaters. I see no harm in feeding juvenile fish every day and it is essential for fish under 1.5" for proper growth.
