Hey guys I decided to try to feed my 10 loaches cucumber. I dropped in 1/4 of a cucumber into my tank with a fork, but the clownloaches seem scared of it. How long can I leave it there for before it goes bad? I saw online somebody saying 12 hours, some others saying 24. And does it usually take awhile for them to figure out the cucumber is food? Thanks

I tried that too, not only for my loaches but for my pleco as well but instead of using cucumber, I used zuchini. I found if I cut it into 1/4 to 1/2 inch slices, they liked it a bit better than chunks. Maybe smaller pieces might help them.

Did you blanch the cucumber? A lot of the time fish won't eat it unless it is blanched.

Nope I've only heard of this for peas actually. Maybe I'll try it tomorrow with some other pieces. Anybody know how long the cucmber will be okay in the tank for?

You could leave it in there forever and it wouldn't really matter. As long as you have a good bacteria colony it will jut break down like fish poo. I'd leave it for a day at most. If they don't eat it by then, they aren't going to.

I say don't blanch, it kills vitamins or some crap like that.
Take a knife or fork and scratch some lines into it, that
will get the "smell" into the water, and they seem to be
more interested in freshly cut parts anyway. I did that
with both zucchini and cucumber, now they tear it up
(or would if i'd get off my ass get them some veggies.)
Some of them take longer to come around than others.

i slice a 6" piece lengthways, they seem to ignore the outer layer and skin. no blanching either, quick run under hot water and in.

:iagree:

I don't even blanche or run my veggies under hot water. They like yellow squash too. I just weigh it down and next thing you know, they're practically fighting over it. Just takes time...
