I know its not that big of a deal since theyre convicts but this is my first time spawning any cichlid and was just wondering when they become free swimming what i should be feeding them? do their parents crush up food and filter it through their gills for them?

Convicts are great little fish! I have a pair and the just spawned a little over a week ago, the fry should become free swimming after 3-4 days and you can feed them crushed flake and they should eat it with in the first few times of feeding it. They eat nearly anything you give them. Good luck with them!!!

They will crush flakes for the fry. You can also feed brine shrimp and Hikari First Bites (powdered fish food for fry). I've been feeding my fry a mixture of the above and it's working well.

okay thanks alot guys, ye this is my first time owning convicts, great little fish really fun to watch

Yes, they are fun! I breed marbled convicts - you don't need to do anything - other than feed the parents flake food. They will practically raise themselves lol

i just pulverize the the flakes between my fingers b4 i drop them in

They are incredibly resilient. I used to throw my convict fry in for my africans until the fry started surviving and taking over the tank in spite of the much larger fish. They will easily eat the leftovers from what you feed the parents.

I threw in an extra male
Con I had last week as a feeder to my dovii and he's still alive a week later hiding under the drift wood taking in peices of food my dovii spits out. These guys are survivors. I have a new found respect for them

It's true that the parents will make sure they eat by crushing food for them. However, hatching baby brine is super easy and will get them growing really fast. I feed bbs for the first 2 weeks of life, and by that point they are able to take bites out of flake food.
