I just got 4 cons two day ago and so far they have pretty pretty timid. If they see me they swim and hide. Also when I try to feed them, some floating pellets, they never go up after them. If I drop in some flakes they will eat them but after they start sinking. This normal, like other fish does it take them time to feel comfortable? Should I be trying to feed them something else?

Don't worry, I never see my Datnoid and he eats a lot. I just wish he would grow faster. Speaking of which, he just came out of his cave as I am typing this, and now he is gone. Don't worry, they will eat and start breeding and stop being timid pretty soon.

I have seen them come out of hiding and swim up right under some of the floating pellets, look at them and then go back to hiding. So yeah they are either not quite comfortable yet, or just not hungry enough.

They also may have never had the pellets before. Get them on a regular feeding schedule with flakes for a couple weeks then introduce the pellets instead.

Will my convicts come to the top of the tank at feeding time once they get used to their new surrounds like say Oscars do? I have heard they do this, but since this is my first experience with them I have no idea.

convicts are very bold, once they get used to the tank and the surroundings they will come out and observe you. my friend has two pairs and they arent afraid of anything. they will eat the pellets once they are used to being fed in that tank and once they are used to where the food comes from.

Agreed!! :) Give them a couple more days to a couple weeks and you'll be wonderign why they never hide :) well till one disappears for a while in a cave :D

Yea, the cons we have at work will nail the surface when they get fed. Our convicts don't even realize where they are supposed to be. I have found them in other fish's tanks before as well.
