What do you feed yours? I plan on having him in a community tank with some angels, an electric blue ram, and a school of hatchetfish. I'm a little concerned about making sure he eats. I planned on using a pellet as a staple for the other fish and mixing in brine shrimp and bloodworms. Will he take these as well or only live food? Are ghost shrimps a good option to feed them?

They eat everything, if worry more about your current stock than the pike.

They aren't as mean as others but still they are predatory and claim spots very well. The free swimming angels aren't an issue but they may assert dominance over those ram quickly.

Cool, thanks for the information. I was worried about getting them to eat but I'm relieved now, this will be my first attempt with a pike cichlid. I'm pretty pumped about it.
I figured there might be some hostility from the angels but I'm converting from africans so I have plenty or rocks to build territories and hiding spaces. I was thinking of maybe going with a small cichlid like a convict, instead of the ram, to hold his own but not a breeding pair (I've seen those little guys terrorize my tank before. Had two JD's, 3 Oscars, a red devil, a firemouth, and a green terror all in one corner).

Tank is 55 until the angels get larger then I'll move them to a 75 or 125. Tank will be planted, has a 30 gallon sump plus a hob. Going dirt. I'm gonna have dithers in there as well to disperse the aggression. This is all prep for my discus tank I plan on putting together once I'm settled with my living arrangement.

Wat about apisto pair? I find they fair better than rams sometimes. If you can really check around for some wild rams. And keep like 8-10 till you sort out a few pairs. They will be much better with the Regani. Regani's are small and slow growers. But none the less, it's a pike, it's built to hunt, it's lightning quick and like any other cichlid they can get nasty. (Usually not tho.)

I really like the apistogamma agassizii. I think they're neat looking and I'm leaning towards them more than the rams but it depends on what I can get my hands on. I plan on adding the pike last to the stock once the dithers put on enough size.

where abouts are you in jersey? I'm in sj and havent come across any wild rams being sold.
