Hi i recently bought a Ctenolucius hujeta (hujeta gar), and the people at the pet store said to feed it krill or feeder fish. I fed it one feeder, and after two days i have tried to feed it krill everyday but it wont eat. is there anything wrong with the fish and what should i do?

Hujeta gars are normally piscivorous meaning that they eat only fish.

If you want to get it onto frozen krill (chances are they won't eat freeze dried), try not feeding it for a couple days then dropping a small piece of frozen krill in the tank (thawed of course). He should be hungry enough to jump at whatever lands in the water.

If he doesn't do this, try dead feeders. Drop in freshly dead feeders. They look like live feeders and taste like it, but they don't move. Once he is eating dead foods, it is much easier to get him on frozen.

mine did and he all so ate pellets.... don't use feeder....

I have one and its generally a pain to get him to eat anything but danios, I've had limited success with frozen silversides, but usually he wants nothing to do with them since they don't "FIGHT" once bitten...earthworms are a good one, a can-a-bait machine nearby my place is awesome, but I understand some people have limited access to bait shops/machines...good luck, its a battle...Hujeta's are notoriously finicky eaters.

In my experience hujeta are one of the easiest piscivor characins to get off live compared to Hydrolycus, Boulengerella etc. Mine ate everything, including pellets, whereas it took me almost 3 months for the Hydrolycus to even eat frozen silversides... pita

feeders r just gross and filled with disease. breeding your own guppies would be a good choice and your gar would be alot healthier not eating store bought feeders. and with the krill, relax it takes a while
