Im just wondering... can i feed fire ants to fish? I have an overpopulated ant farm and well i was wondering if i could feed them to my fishes :P

Not a good idea at all to feed adult ants to your fish. Most ants can spray any of several types of acids from their mouths depending on species. Fire ants harbor a venomous sting which contains a toxic alkaloid venom called solenospin. While this venom has a short duration before breaking down in the body through histamines, a major ingestion from more than a few ants can cause death. Back in the day before the readily available prepared fish foods, ants were used to feed small and medium sized fish. However, fish were fed on the eggs and pupae, not on adult ants.

LOL! Sorry, but I had to laugh at the way you said all of that, Oddball. It's simply amazing sometimes the things you can know off the top of your head. For instance, I knew about the venomous sting, but I couldn't have told you what it was called without doing some quick googling.

Some ants not sure which ones have formic acid in their systems which can't be good for fish. I would stay away from feeding ants to any of your fish.

I can appreciate the thought but just to be safe, better not! there are plenty other options for feeding your fish.

yeah, I was thinking the same thing.

not to mention many ants can survive for quite a while underwater. long enough to do some internal damage before they die.
