I am a bit confused. I have heard many things about feeding fish, and get more confused with each thing i read.

I have several tanks, and feed them every night. I am certain I am overfeeding them, but am so afraid that they will starve. I watch to see what they eat within a minute, but not everyone gets to the food within that minute.

Just how much is too much? I try to do frequent water changes to compensate, and everone seems happy except the livebearers. They are forever getting sick. I am not sure if this is from over feeding. I have 2 30 gallon filters on a 30 gallon long, having just added the 2nd yesterday. I had a 30 and a 10 before.

Really as long as each fish is eating you should be ok,i always take the food and make a line all the way along the tank so that the food is spread out, seems to work great

what i use is different types of food...sinking and floating for all level fish i feed them if its all gone in a minute i feed a small amout again 5 mins later...some days i miss feeding and some times i feed up to 3 times. but i have cichlids and they need to get big!

good way to indicate if your over feeding is to test the water for ammonia, nitrate and nitrite. its easier to over feed than under feed a fish....a fish can go quite a while without food.

most problems with livebearers is water qaulity so check you have the right amount of bio-load for your tank. if i was you i wouldn't buy anymore new fish until all the fish in the tank are of good health and any that look ill i'd just put to sleep.

and i expect you vac the substrate? As thats where most of the left over food will be.

I don't plan on getting any more livebearers for awhile. All the levels in the tanks seem to do pretty good. Usually don't get any levels of anything unless I go 2 weeks without water changes, which is extremely rare for me. I guess I will try the different levels of food for the tanks that have bottom feeders. I do feed a variety of food to keep them healthy. Thanks

yeah with community fish ....little and often in the key ...add the sinking food first so the fish go for it...then add the top food so the top food fish swim up for it leaving behind the sinking. lol trick the little buggers.

I had a lot of problems with livebearers too, despite that they are "hardy." My friend that keeps fish read an article somewhere that most of these fish are raised in antibiotic-water, which basically means they are mass produced in medicine to prevent illness. Then once they get to water without any prevention measures, they are weak and susceptible to disease.

As far as feeding, I agree with Princess. To get food to all fish feed at all levels with floating & sinking foods,. If you have catfish/nocturnal fish make sure you feed before lights out if you have ones that won't venture out during the day.
