Yesterday I just purchased my third Flagtail (Semaprochilodus taeniurus). The first two did not survive a week, one was about 3.5 inches and refused food of any kind. The second was supposed to be tank raised (although I have my doubts from what I have read on the species) and was less than an inch long. This was a rescue buy because it did not look all that well and I hoped I could pull it through. But after one day it was dead.
The third fish is doing much better, it is in a 20 gallon quarantine tank with a Geophagus sps. A little after an hour after acclimation it was grazing algae off the plants (it's a grow out tank for Amazon Swords as well as a quarantine tank) and off the glass. But the algae is rather sparse and it won't be long before it has grazed it all away.
I know these are wild caught fish and I want to transition it to available foods. So far I have offered it algae wafers, a few crushed green peas and a bit of frozen brine shrimp, but so far it isn't interested.
If you have kept Flagtails, how have you transitioned them to "regular" foods? I don't want to loose a third fish!
