Who has had success using wild caught fish as a food source for their stock? I have basically unlimited access to wild caught panfish (Bluegill, Sunfish, Crappie). I could easily keep some frozen filets aside from what my family eats (I have a freezer full of Crappie) and thaw when needed to add variety to my staple diet. I wouldn't think there'd be much difference than buying Tilapia or shrimp form the store other than my cost savings.

Looking for Pro's vs. Con's?

I don't see any cons to using it.Since it's already been frozen there should be little to no risk of passing anything on to your fish...Nothing like good free food, for your family and your pets.

I would agree. If it is being frozen then chanes are anything it could pass on is probably dead. I don't think its much different then feeding out filets from the grocery store. Wild caught stuff is probably healthier.

Frozen panfish fillets would be excellent choice to feed your fishes. It's much healthier than a tilapia fillet at supermarket.

That's what I figured. Just wanted some outside opinions. Think it's necessary to skin the filets? (I think it would cut down fouling the water i.e.: fats, oils, and scales released that may not be eaten). Or am I being overly paranoid?

Personally I would remove the skin from the fillets.

Theres probably some nutritional value from the skin!

MN,what makes you say the panfish may be healthier than store bought tilapia?
Chemicals and hormones in tilapia fillets. Plus some of tilapia may been fed with human feces...depends if your supermarket got tilapia from China or other countries.
Panfish fillets are all natural and no hormones or chemicals in them at all.

^ just like free roaming chicken eggs are healthier than commercial farm eggs. All natural.
