How often do you feed your gars when they are still small? Also how often does an adult gar eat?

John

try and get it on pellets as soon as you can.

getting them on pellets is a good idea, but definitely not "as soon as you can". gars under 8inches should have ready access to food items (most of the time this means feeders for small gars) 24/7.

as soon as they are large enough to undergo the starvation treatment :)

As Xander said, YOY gars under 8" should always have access to food e.g. feeders. Older gars usually can be fed every other day without any problems, but if you notice any major aggression between the gars and/or their tankmates, then you may want to try feeding them daily.

Long-term starvation isn't a healthy way to get them on pellets.

I didn't say long term

Ah, okay. When most people mention that they starved their gars to get them on pellets, they usually say that they had to starve them for more than a few days; that's why I mentioned the "long-term" part, just to be safe. A few days without food will not hurt them if they're large enough and in good health.

YoY fish should be "free fed" as in food should be available whenever the fish is hungry. and Live food is the best way to do this. and Unlike alot of other species Gar are Piscivores... they by nature eat fish. The only dis-service you do them is if you are feeding unhealthy fish as food. My gar take pellets readily, but feeders are still a good part of their diet. On pellets alone they do not look anywhere near as healthy 'nore active 'nore plump... as fed exclusively pellets (thats just my own personal experiances and things I've noticed). One of my floridas is to lazy to catch feeders sometimes and eats pellets in preference simply because he doesn't have to work for it. start offering pellets at 10" + and remove any uneaten pellets in the AM.. your gar are more likely to try new foods ime over-night.

I still have fish in the tank to swim in the same tank as my GAR. These fish are feeding. In addition, I feed him the frozen pangasius. Sometimes eats pangasius and sometimes live fish....
