Hello everyone. I am brand new here and came to ask a question. About a month and a half ago I came across what I was told was a Texas Chichlid at a Petco that someone had given to them because he was eating everyone in the persons tank. They had him in a 15 gallon and he was miserable. They told me they were going to have a hard time finding him a home and he wasn't eating. So what did I do?!?! Got a tank and set it up for him. He is a hoot and rips his tank apart daily. He has what I call tantrums but maybe its normal behavior. Anyway they had no history on him and no idea what he was eating. Obviously I am a newbie that didn't even think him thru but I am trying. Anyway it took him about 2 weeks in our care to start eating but he isn't a great eater. We have tried frozen chichlid delight, frozen krill and frozen bloodworms. The only thing he really will eat is frozen bloodworms but he eats them slowly and it doesn't seem like it's enough to sustaine his size. He will NOT eat pellets. Does anyone have any advice for me? Like I said any is appreciated as I really don't have a clue what I am doing with him. My son has a flowerhorn and he is a very easy to feed fish. We have had no issues with him at all. We also have a community tank that we have no issues with. ** I cannot post as pic as it will not let me.

I would personally try NLS Ultra Red, 3mm (Large Fish). I keep various fish, including carpintis, and they all go crazy for that formula. It contains krill, fish, squid, algae/seaweed, etc. It's not cheap, but it might be just the ticket to bring this non red fish around. Just feed a few presoaked pellets at a time, each AM, until he comes around.

Good luck!

Thank you!! I appreciate it!! Any thoughts on if he is in fact a Texas chichild? Also any guesses on his age?

With the size of the pearls, I would guess a male Herichthys cyanoguttatus, not carpintis. Could be a mix, not sure.

This looks like a hybrid to me. The fact that he was sold as a "red texas" suggests this as well. Some sort of texas/flowerhorn mix. Very pretty fish regardless.
I would try soaking pellets in fresh ground garlic before feeding. I have had some luck getting picky eaters onto pellets with this method, it stimulates the appetite.

It was sold as a Texas cichlid, not an RT. But I agree, it doesn't appear to be pure. Either way a handsome fish.
