Zucchini tends to be a healthier and more accepted option for plecos in my experience. Stuffing the veggies with the wafers should help them eventually recognize the veggies as food, but it can take several tries. Also, although they are called algae wafers, most I've seen contain a significant amount of protein in them as well. Hikari as an example, the first ingredient listed is fish meal. Algae wafers are certainly a better option than most other pellets, but getting them converted to veggies will be a better choice for herbivorous plecos in the long run.
