Hello fellow mfk'ers :)

Happy Thursday

How do you coup with the feeding task for your wet pet(s)? While away or on vacation when no one is it home for at least 3 weeks. And also asking someone to come in and put out food is not an option

For pellet trained fish I am sure a automatic feeder can be used but how about other one which need fish or or other fresh food ? I.e. Gars or Hoplias Family curu aimara etc.

Thanks

Short of pellet training them before you leave lol there isn't much option besides having someone else feed them. I would imagine if you gorge them for several days prior to leaving that they would be fine, albeit ravenous, until you return. depending on how big they are that is.

Three weeks is a long time the instinct of survival would kick in you will come back to someone being killed or eaten please try to trust someone to stop by to feed.

Actually my gar is on pellets so no worries there but other meat eaters are on fish and shrimp.

I am not sure if wolf fish can take pellets. Even if that's the case it will be impossible to train .

As P predatorkeeper87 said my be feed them little over so they have bit more fat to sustain I guess. Lol

But I do agree their survival instinct will be awaken

Just be prepared for possible casualties as said instinct kicks in. Predatory fish like that tend to have a good physiology when it comes to surviving long stretches without food. I would have to imagine in the wild wolf fish and other characins probably go weeks if not months without food at times, so this shouldn't be any big deal for them.

What I tend to do with my predators is, if I'm leaving for longer than a week, is get a good batch of feeders a few weeks beforehand, QT and treat them with the appropriate meds and then leave them in the tank with my fish while I'm gone. That way they get kind of a treat and a semi-sustainable food source for the time I can't feed them the proper diet.

Thanks this is something to think about for sure .

I've been away for 3 to 4 weeks at a time without feeding my fish. Unless they are fry size, fish are cold blooded animal and can starve for weeks with no long term ill effect. Remember many moutbrooders and breeding fish won't eat for weeks to incubate eggs. Without feeding, the water quality will be maintained at optimum condition and dead fish will quickly be consumed. Asking friends to feed your fish may do more harm than good by polluting the water.
