Just curious if anyone feeds their fish insects found around the house like spiders, flys, earwigs ect. Is it a safe thing to be doing. The insects are usually live or had just been hit with a swatter, no chemicals used at all.
A lot of people drop household insects into their tanks, me included. I wouldn't use something that had flown in though, because farmers and gardeners around here take pesticiding very seriously.
Yep. Houseflies, moths, tiny cockroaches. All either caught by hand or swatted of course.
Discus and blue rams usually get the ~5mm cockroaches. When my salvini was little, 2-3", she used to eat 6-12 house flies a day. My archer fish, blue acara and salvini all really like moths.
I can tell when the salvini has caught herself a moth that's flown inside the hood; she gets shiny silver wing scales stuck on her fangs.
I've put bugs and such in my tanks for years, no worries.
Spiders, Crickets, Worms, Flies and so on all get dropped into the tanks if I find them. It is good for the fish to vary the diet and good for my budget to get free food sometimes.
Not a great idea because you should treat your fish like nature is in your home, with respect and home bugs doesn't seem a respectful way to care for a fish like that. You know i dump thousands of dollars down just to care for my own fish and i mean serious Monsterfish. By the way i'm new in here.
My green sunfish loves crickets. I buy dozens of crickets each week for my tarantulas. Anything that is left over after my spider feeding goes right in the fish tank. He seems to like crickets better than any other food I offer him. I don't use "wild" insects out of the fear they encountered some type of pesticide.

By the way, I've only fed one insect to my fish. I dropped a small, live spider into my tank and my silver arowana hit it like a bass hitting a lure. I did it out of curiosity. I wanted to see how he would respond to being fed a live insect. I don't make a habit of it.
