Just sitting around bored and had a random idea. anyone ever fed large cats baby mice/rats? they're much easier to breed than feeder fish and i dont know if they'd cause infections or malnurish them or anything. it'd save some money on feeding though. Anyone tried it?

and if you're wondering i'd be looking at feeding a TSN, RTC and marble pim.

Not a great idea.

Those three cats you listed would readily take frozen fish and shrimp, and probably pellets as well.

I saw a youtube video of someone feeding mice to their arowana... Not a good idea!!!

a live one will scratch and bite

when a predator and prey are in a fight for survival there can always be a chance where the predator takes a few hits

I for one feel a little different on this matter. Although I am a little new to the big cat world I am sure in nature a big cat will snag a mammal from time to time. I do not see why their would be any problem at all with cats digesting animal fat. I also do not rememebring a decent thread or reasearch paper saying otherwise. I am sure an Aro in the wild will snag an occasional bird, bat, mouse, rat that falls into or is crossing the water. Look at a large mouth bass. That damn thing will eat snakes, rats, frogs, birds, fish, ect. IMO an occasional mouse will not hurt. Unless your talking about pinkys be ready to clean the filter of hair because it will not be digested. I think it could offer them a more wide variety of nutrition. I think cats out of anything would be more able to digest anything compared to many other fish. I would not make it a regualr thing becasue i am sure that would be a very low % of his diet in the wild. Now something like and armatus or similar fish that is obviously designed to handle fish only I wouldn't recommend. All just my opinion of course. Do be aware as stated above, the mouse/rat could scratch and bite. That all up to you.. I doubt the cat will care much, just thinks mmm mmm good!!!

I Agree with OnceLoyal
I am not a big fan of Catfish myself, But as a first hand exprince the diet of Nile catfish ( Clarias gariepinus) in the wild contains - besid tilabia- a wide varity of insects, small snakes, froges and rodents plus heavily scavenging on any mammal carcase may be found in the water, Mostly that will ably to any other big catfish in the world

as with any foreign or unintended food source i guess there's a possibillity for infection and i've only heard opinions on mamal fat to certain fish. i know several people who recommend it for their lungfish (not that i'd necissarily follow that) when we go fishing i've cought channel cats on beef heart and weird stuff like that so i know they'd probably eat just about anything that fell into the water. i've caught little pike on mice shaped lures too, and if the company thinks it's logical to make a mouse lure, they've probably done experiments on wild fish eating mice (although probably not the mainstream of their diet.) maybe i'll run down to a river and catch a little channel cat and feed it nothing but mice to see how long he lasts, before adding it to the diet of my rarer fish. seems like a decent experiment. any thoughts on that?

i agree-there is a difference from feeding mice, which will be similar to water voles and the like and feeding farm reared beef laced with steroids.
Also in south America there are massive floods during the year that must drown thousands of land mammals-yum,yum.:D
