Hey guys. I've been reading through the loach section and keep seeing people say clowns will eat smaller fish. Back in the day I was babysitting a little alligator snapping turtle and using feeder guppies etc as food. In no time the guppies were breeding and little tiny fry were everywhere. I'm planning on starting a small planted tank so I can have an endless supply of snails. If I were to throw in some guppy's and start them breeding do you think the loaches would benefit from getting some small guppies during dinner time? The clowns are in the 4in range, with some yoyo's and angelicus too. Do they eat fish when they're smaller or is that a behavior they pick up once they get older? Any thoughts are appreciated - Nereus

I don't think they will "benefit" i think its not worth it...but it wouldnt seem to have a downside as long as you breed the feeders yourself

Explain "not worth it". I figure with a whole animal, it's a whole meal. Intestines, meat, skeleton etc. You can't beat that. Plus guppies are cheap, and breed like rabbits. I'm thinking if you add small whole animals it's win/win. Just like the snails, once established and proven to be disease free, after your initial investment, it's self sustaining. All you'd have to do is add some new genetics from time to time. Let me know what you think.

by "not worth it", I mean its a lot more trouble setting up a breeding operation for the feeders, when the nutrition from high quality pellets is probably equal to, if not better, than that from the guppies.

Guppies are the easiest fish to breed & keep as feeders. I have done it with my Angels/Oscars and just started doing it again for my Goldfish.

True cichla but its something different for the fish. My Angels were always excited & more active when I fed them feeders. It gave them something to do besides lounge around the tank.

As for clowns eating them, I'm sure they would. I've seen my dojo eat platy fry, which I tried to save but with no luck.
