I want LOTS !!! of opinions here, I keep primarily Native fish in about 6 tanks, and food has always been a major concern for me, they will eat blood worms, mysis, mosquito larvae, glasworms, etc. However... The last trip to my LFS i was browsing food, and found in the turtle/herp food area, freeze dried crickets, and meal worms and other turtle food, my question is since these sound like somthing Natives would eat in the wild, has anyone tried feeding these to fish, they should be either added varied nutrition or wasted money. What do you guys think ??:help2:

stuff like freeze-dried crickets could be a nice thing to add as part of the diet, I see no problem in that

What kind of Natives? Sunfish are pigs and will convert to prepared food like pellets fast. My Perch have switched over because of the competition with the sunfish for food. You can get just about any fish switched to pellet with time and patience. If you can get the fish switched over to prepared foods then you might want to try something like I'm about to do and give Purina Trout chow a shot and see how the fish do.

Hmmm, Im thinkin that trout chow stuff would fit that niche, it should be formulated with native fish in mind dont you think ?

The Trout Chow is formulated for balanced nutrients and growth in mind. But is a good all around feed. I grew out some 8" trout to about 20"+ Trout in a little over a year and a half on Trout Chow (I started with sinking shrimp pellets since they wouldn't eat the floating right off the bat)
They were still growing when the Otters got em...

If you are to go the pellet route, I would still make sure to give them a varied diet and add bloodworms, earthworms, and bits of fish fillets to the diet. You just dont have to ad these as much or as often, but its still beneficial to the fish

what about Purina Game fish chow?? ive use it to feed the bass and stuff in my pond

Be careful with game/pond fish foods in the tank; they are often "messier" than aquarium foods and will quickly foul your water.

All my sunfish are converted to cichlid pellets suplimented with usual cichlid fare such as crickets, bloodworm, fish strips etc... They seem happy and healthy. Don't know about using the "chows" in small aquaria, seems like they can be messy, but have never tried them myself. Those trutle treats should work just fine, the only prohibiting thing would those would be cost.

Yeah, i noticed they were pretty pricey for just a small container, but if i only fed those like twice a week, along with say hikari chiclid pellets, and 3-4 different frozen and freeze dried items, that should make the little punks happy :), I just dont want them complainin cause they gotta eat pizza all the time......so to speak. I take my obligation to my fish seriously. I say if you dont wanna take care of them right, then leave them in the lake, stream, or wherever you got them. And by the way thanks for the input all.
