feeding oascar

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
First welcome to MFK. Second u can feed your oscar the crikets @ a young age like when they are abut 3-4in but they might have to be small crickets. My friend used to get his pinky feeder mice and feed him that. thats the weirdest/coolest thing i have being feed to an oscar

the thing about oscars is that they will eat about anything that you put in the tank... I know that mine have eaten anything from left over pizza topings to feeders. I would recommend not feeding them table scraps. It is fun to watch them eat it, but it can make them really sick. The other thing that you might want to try is the hikari pelets. all of my cichlids eat the red colored ones with the color enhancer and they love it. You could also feed them freeze dried brine shrimp or frozen shrimp.

Good Luck and welcome to MFK!!! :woot:

ya mine love the Hikari peletes to the red ones. i get near the tank and all three run to one spot and slightly jump out of the water till i put the food in.

Feed them a decent cichlid pellet as a staple. For treats give them insects, worms, fruit, krill and other freezedried and frozen food. Avoid store bought feeders and avoid any mammal and bird meat with the exception of beefheart.

I feed my 12 inch Oscar Hikari Cichlid gold, frozen and freeze dried krill, night crawlers, Feeders (goldfish and rosies). I try to give all my fish a selection but mostly the pellets.

Aside from the usual store-bought food sticks, I feed my oscar whole earthworms, and pieces of chicken, beef and shrimp from the kitchen.

The fish grows really fast (and generates a lot of waste too!) :)

yeah, Mice! live mice! when it's full grown it can tackle alot of small animals.I had a friend that fed a mouse to a big tiger oscar and he grabbed it by the tail and sat at the bottom of the tank until it drowned then swallowed it head first.KILLER! :headbang2

these guys are right. pellet food is probably best as a staple but oscars like to "chew" pellets and make a big mess.consider the wild diet. anything that will fit into their mouths is viewed as food, small mammals included. whole animals are a complete balanced diet, that and they seem to make less mess in the tank.pellets are cheaper and readily available.live foods are a good treat.for the oscar and you and all your friends!
