so ive read a little about what you should and shouldnt feed pirahnas.ive had some that all i fed them was deer heart and liver.when i had discus i made my own food for them.the recipe had liver, spinich, bananas.some vitamins, betta carotine, and garlic.the garlike was to fightintestinal worms, the spinach was for some plant matter, betta carotine helped with the red color.my question is can i do this with pirahnas?any one know where i can find a recipe?ive read also not to feed them minnows or lake fish.is this only because of worrying about disease?how about if i fillet them out and freeze them or feed them freshly filled?

Hello and welcome to MFK!

I feed my juvie beef heart and flake food. He seems to like both and really doesn't show a preference.

Most MFK'ers agree not to feed live since the nutritional value isn't really there, plus, most carnivorous fish tend to be messy eaters. Messy eaters = high ammonia. But, there's a lot that do use live feeders. It comes down to the keeper's preferences.

I don't know of a recipe for homemade piranha food. Hopefully someone else will and guide you to it.

Take care!

Welcome to MFK,

You can make your own food, but make sure they won't dissolve quickly once they hit water. I never done so myself but I think you could make them into some sort of gelatin form. there should be recipe online, just search around. here's one I found.

piranha eat mostly fish meat (white fish, like bass, catfish, tilapia, etc) so you should feed those instead of red meat (salmon, beef, hearts, etc) you could do it once in a blue moon as treat but not as a stable food.

If you want to go catch your own fish from local lake or river that's fine, just make sure the water there is clean. if you want to feed live then quarantine them for extend period of time to make sure no disease or parasites. otherwise you can fillet them and freeze to kill off most parasites.

I'm not a fan of feeding fish with razor sharp teeth kibbles and bits. Live foods that are not Cyprinidae are IMO bar none the best nutrition however expensive and unessassary for Piranha. I use live Mollies for my Vampire, PBass, and Cudas. I use API general cure to treat any new feeders becaise it contains prazziquantel for internal parasites. The Mollies are feed Supirulina flake, chopped up raw shrimp, and crumbled massivore delielite. My P's eat - frozen raw Silverslides, Tilapia, market Shrimp, and any other White fish I come across. At their current sizes I'd need the equivelant of 7 mollies daily @ $1 a each to replace their current diet with live foods. A large bag of Silverslides cost like $9 and contains 50-100 fish.

I feed mine a main staple food of tilapia, smelt, and hikari cichlid pellets. I feed them beefheart and shrimp as a treat, and about once a month I get them guppies as live-feeders. Like said above, make sure to quarantine them first. my lfs is pretty good tho, no diseased fish in several years of purchases.

been feeding the p's some freeze dried krill.they seem to like it.sounds like oscars eating pellits.now i know you shouldnt feed anything spiders.but how about crickets and grass hoppers?
