Makin a Poo
So I've tried cucumber with no success.. I have a small green Phantom & a Flat Flyer. I've had them both about 4 months.. I very rarely see them because my tank has some fantastic hiding spots lol... I picked up a sweet potato & a zucchini at the store today... Just curious what is the best way to get these guys to try the new food... I'm assuming they just scavage the left over pellets & flake that the big guys miss...

any help would be appreciated..

Cut the sweet potato so that it has lots of skin surface area. Many likes the skin and go after that first. There are no secrets, just stick a fork in it, tie a string on the fork, and dump it in. No boiling, no microwaving, no worrying about it. Just drop it in before lights out, and check in the morning for signs of consumption. If not, keep it in for couple more days, it shouldn't really do anything to your water in couple days.

Put the potato in last night about a hour before lights out... As of right now no progress... I'll remove it here in the next hour or so & try again with a fresh piece tonight.. I'm assuming I may have to do this fora good little while until it gets noticed?

My common and Red Spotted HF like zuccini. I give them an inch thick piece around every other day and they.love it. Tried sweet potato and pumpkin and they didnt really take to it. Even tried boiled carrots but their favorite.seems to be zuccini. When they were smaller I gave them half boiled green beans and they went crazy for that too.

Ive given many plecos veggies. Broccoli, sweet potato, carrot, zucchini, they'd munch on banana and orange too. For the broccoli, sweet potato carrot and zucchini we would steam them to soften, then cut on an angle for max surface area. The steamed stuff all sinks. And since the pieces were roughly 1"×2" they were eaten quick with no leftovers after a day.

so you steamed the veggies you say... Maybe that's the issue I'm having. I just rinsed them off cut them in half longways then cut that in half at a angle put a fork in it & put it in the tank close to the driftwood they hang out in.. If nothing happens tonight I may try to steam them tomorrow & see if that works.

I think steaming makes it slightly easier for them to eat. Mind you there were only 2-3 pieces per 8" panaque. And the same amount for 2 slightly smaller misc plecos. Also other fish picked at the veg too which would help with the whole "no leftovers" thing. Size the pieces according to your own needs. Good luck.

I think the issue is the type you are trying to feed the veggies to. It will take awhile for them to get used to them and want to eat them.
For now just continue trying and feed their regular foods. If they never take to veggies it's not a horrible thing.
