Are there any benefits when feeding fish with prawns complete with shell?
Is the shell beneficial to fish? like do they get any nutrients from the sheel?

Lately i've been feeding my arowanas prawn includinmg the head. i just remove the hard covering with the sharp horn, and rinse thoroughly with water. Is there anything i should be worried about?

They probably get some nutrition from all parts of the animal that they eat,as long as it is raw.

You can't get nutrients from things you can't digest. It would probably act as fiber.

Great source of fiber. And like Evan said-fish don't de-shell in the wild :-) That's reason enough for me to feed shell and all to my Oscars.

thanks:) will continue to feed with shell and head :)
btw i think they can digest the shell? since it's not seen in the poop anymore?

I have to guess that they digest it quite well, because I never see any remnants of it. By the way, if you're getting really fresh shrimp, the head has these spiky parts on it. I've always been nervous about them. So, I pull off the shell just from the head to remove those spikes, and try and leave the brain and everything (yum! LOL) for the nutritional value. I've been poked by the spikes and it made me bleed, so I'm just nervous about putting that in my fishes' tummies.

The presence of feces is the presence of indigestible elements of what all animals are eating. Just because you don't crap a carrot does not mean you could digest every bit of it.

I dont know anyone who picks through their poop looking for carrot remains to see what gets digested but my fish eats the shrimp I feed it shell and all,and it is not visible in its feces.

I was referring more to how when you feed mealworms, you'll actually see the whole mealworm exoskeleton in the poo. Sometimes they come loose and float around. I have never observed this with shrimp shells or tails.
