I have a young 3" Champsochromis Caeruleus that I am growing on and I notice that he won't eat food properly, he will avoid cichlid crisps and cichlid pellets, Ive found the only thing he will eat is
1. the small pieces of food that are dispersed during feeding or biting the food.
2. cichlid flakes. as they sink he goes mad.

is this normal behaviour for a predatory hap? and how long before he accepts the same food as the others (he just spits it out)

I'm just worried about him not eating enough.

I've grown out a bunch of these guys and this is not normal behavior. Are the pellets properly sized? Do other fish with similarly-sized mouths have any trouble?

If not, it sounds like he may be sick. Is he wild-caught? Does he have a sunken belly?

^^^ very reasonable argument, but if he appears healthy, it could be his previous owner only fed him this small food... i have had many cichlids spit pellets for a couple weeks, but they eventually adapted (starvation method... a healthy cichlid will eventually be hungry enough to accept it). good luck!

well all the other cichlids are eating just fine, I've had it happen before, but Im not sure if they have only been fed flakes or live food at the pet store.
He is eating at least And he seems perfectly healthy

haha well its good to know Spartacus that I'm not alone, I think i'm breaking through with him, last night he ate one piece of regular food, and then ate all the little breakoff pieces of the others, so at least he is beginning to eat aggressively like the others, I say he because he was the largest in the tank and already has a blue glow to his bottom lip.
