Hello All, how prone are RBP's to ick? Also, how prone are RBP's to catch something from a feeder fish? I'm newer to RBP's and it is my understanding that Piranha's eat diseased fish or "The weak/diseased Fish" in the wild. Why would it be any different in the aquarium?

I introduced some guppies with my GT. He recently died. Do not feed your RBP fish. Feerder fsh AKA Gold Fish are pretty much fat, bone and scales. Not much nutrients their. Feed them pellet and frozen foods. Thats the best.

i definitely agree, feed pellets or frozen, don't chance killing a number of piranhas because you want to see them tear up a fish

MAYBE THE LFS U BUY URS FROM DONT Q THERE FEEDER FISH BUT MY LFS DOES SORRY FOR USING CAPS

I don't think any LFS could control disease in there feeder tanks. If you go and ask your LFS if they can guarantee that not one of there feederfish has a disease then they are lieing to you. Even feeder fish breeders won't guarantee you. s=So even if the fish have been quaranteened or not your p's still have a very large risk of contracting a disease.

There is a pretty common problem with DO NOT FEED FEEDERS AT ALL, YOUR PIRANHAS WILL DIE

Thats pretty wrong. I know someone who has been feeding his reds ONLY goldfish for 10+ years.
Your P's will not be as healthy, and it may shorten their life span a few years, but it certainly will not instantly kill them. The harm here would be disease. The argument is Piranhas are scavengers, and eat "diseased" meals in the wild. I have not seen any real credible evidence on either side of this.
A varied diet for a Piranha is best, for an adult I would feed once per week - market shrimp, pellets, and once a month live feeders.

I have read a few interesting studies regarding predatory fish health and hunting their food, conducted by zoos.

I would not jump to the conclusion that feeders are BAD for your fish, but I would be careful because goldfish can carry disease, and should not be their main diet.

OP: My P's never got ick, but that certainly does not mean they are immune.

" Most predatory species that eat live fish can also be weaned onto dead alternatives, so that the use of feeder fish in most situations tends to be because the aquarist wants to use them rather than needs to use them. Some of the species used as feeder fish (goldfish and rosy red minnows) contain high quantities of thiaminase, an enzyme that destroys Vitamin B1 and when fed in large quantities cause nutritional imbalances. Because of the squalid conditions under which feeder fish are often reared and held, they may also be likely to carry bacterial infections and parasites, which can be passed along to any fish that eat them. [1] [2] A large disadvantage of using feeder fish, particularly goldfish, is that they do not actually simulate what tropical fish eat in the wild. The only safe fish to use as feeders are home-raised livebearers (mollies, platies, guppies). "

goldfish=bad..
get ur piranhas on pellets and they will grow alot faster than they will on goldfish.

mine get fed pellets, shrimp, fish fillets, and the occasional guppy raised from my grandmas tank.. i have had them since the summer and they are already rounding the 5-6 inch mark..

there are so many better foods for your p's. i only use feeders on occasion if I want to give them some entertainment. if you want quick growth, use beef heart.
