So how many 2 inch mollies does a 13 inch dovii need in a day ?

Lets avoid the "it is risky to feed live fish".... the topic has been beaten to death, lets not resurrect it here :)

Duanes posted a linc to a article about the stomach content of wild dovii a while back, about 40/50% of there diet is made up of insects. If your trying to replicate a more natural diet then you will need to incorporate these. I would still recommend a staple of pellets though as most good quality ones have all the vitamins, minerals, your fish is going to need.

Do you only feed the Dovii mollies, or is this a special occasion type of thing? The answer to that probably affects how, and how many people, will reply to your question.

If you want to feed exclusively live fish you'll probably get a few replies that say it's not a good idea - because it's probably not a good idea... I'd love to eat rib eyes and New York steak everyday all day - but not a good idea. You get the point.

If you're talking about how many 2" mollies can you feed at one time, on a special occasion, you may get more practical replies - simply because there are probably far more folks on here who only use feeder fish as a treat, rather than a staple.

I'm not against feeding my fish feeders - but I would never buy feeders for that purpose... Breed & grow them yourself so you can be assured they are not carrying disease/parasites.

Why? Seriously buy a gar. Give your Dovii to someone interested in it looking cool. Fish fed only live all look washed out. A varied diet is ALWAYS better. Hard to vary if their stuck on live.--I'd have yours eating pellets and frozen by now. I liked to do a superworm/krill growth mix for the frozen that was their favorite. I put a bunch of spirulina in it I like to think it brings out their blues a bit. 2 cubes in the morning 2 at night supplement with pellets and an occasional victim if you must

A Gar ?.. No way, that thing need a pond not a tank. anyways my dovii eats anything, pellets, mussels, shrimp, the occasional insect that find his way inside the tank. Planning to go live foods for the next couple of weeks or months or so to get a growth spurt as he seems to be stuck in the 13 inch range and from experience, live foods provide lots of protein (and parasites :) ) btw.... been feeding live fish here and there for the past 30 years or so and never had any incidents or disease. I did feed my cichla in the past 20 or so mollies a day, but these guys were 18 inch monsters with an appetite to boot. The dovii on the other hand aint as "hungry" as the cichlas..

Thanks for the advice on the insects... will include meal / superworms in their diet

That's a lot of work for very little nutrition. It's your fish though. Feed him until his aggression towards food declines in the slightest.

Honestly live food wise. I would be willing to bet that earth worms and dubias would smoke feeder fish nutritionally wise unless you stuff them with pellets etc. They would be a whole lot cheaper to.
