so heres the deal:

some people say freshwater feeders are detrimental to the heath of marine predators, so is this true or not?

i personally have been feeding my black frogfish a combination of ghost shrimp and the odd damsel every week or so
but having recently just purchased a juvenile trumpetfish as well, im looking for a more reliable and ore importantly, cheaper, alternative.

i was thinking rosys or fathead minnows. any reasons that would be a bad idea?

Yes, they are fresh water and don't have the right fat/ amino acid balance. As the occasional treat they would be ok but, not as a staple in their diet.

A safe alternative is getting some mollys. they can live in FW or SW and the best part is they breed like crazy so you can buy an initial group andif you have the skillz you can keep the population up on your own.

plus because of their SW ability they balance into SW feeding much better.

yea, idk, im leaning towards netting some baitfish out of the harbor and purging them for a few days prior to gutloading then and ploppin them in.

for now ill use gutloaded ghost shrimp. stupid frogfish isnt ever going to eat off of a stick :(

and the trumpet, well, noone really keeps them, so imma have to experiment.

dude, DO NOT FEED THEM FISH FROM YOUR LAKE!!! that is the worst thing you can do, especially if it is a lake, and not an ocean. get a 20 gallon tank, with a half decent filter, get some mollies, like 4 or 5 of them, feed them LOTS os spirulina, or even nori, keep them brackish, and feed the babys to your frog fish. the trumpet should eventually start eating mysis or brine. weve never had a problem with that at the store. the frog should start eating off a stick, you just have to train him, and yourself to stop eating live foods. try using a stick, with a live feeder on it, he'll eventually get to realize that the stick means food time, even if the feeder gets away, hell see the stick, and see the food, over time, hell recognize its dinner time. than you can start putting a dead feeder on the stick, he should eventually start to go for it, and if he doesnt, dont give him a live feeder. if he doesnt eat after a few days, like maybee 7, than give him a half dead feeder, but always try to get him onto the dead one, than again over time, hell take the dead one, and than the prepared/frozed foods. ive gotten a few fish to eat like that.

dude, a "harbor" where i would be catching the smelt/silversides is marine, dont worry bout that. and mollies, i hate to break it to you, even when kept in salt dont have the needed concentration of beneficial fatty acids and proteins that marine preds need. that much is scientific fact (based off of a European aquaculturist's findings) and as for the trumpet eating mysis or brine, i hope so, that'd be nice.

but the frog, (unidentifed JET black species with no markings, ive tried to id him for months now), i think is a lost cause as far as feeding sticks go. ive tried it all, the feeder on a stick, tricking him to grab a piece of shrimp off of it while he pounces on a live one, the whole 9 yards, and he wont have any of it. ive had him for like 5 months now, and i only feed him every 5 days or so, and i even starved him for 2 weeks and tried, no love. its not a matter of training myself to not feed live, i hate feeding live, hes just one of those fish that wont ever turn despite all my trying.

thnx for the concern, but i feel this topic can be closed as the question was answered by both myself and a fellow member of this board after a bit of digging around.
