Feeding Senegal bichir feeders

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Is there any way to encourage a bichir that's used to eating pellets and dead foods to starting eating live easily?

A variety of Pellets and "dead" foods (particularly sea food) is the best diet for the fish...any fish.

Live fish (feeders) is easily the WORST diet for any fish.

Don't try to spoil a good habit your fish has!

Good luck,

Everything Sidrock said is true, if your fish is on a pellet diet do not ruin something your gonna want when he sucks down feeders($$)

Just so you can get an idea I feed my bichirs:
Pellets
Blood Worms
Beef Heart
Market Shrimp
Silver Sides
Tilapia

Well my polypterus,"Death" will attack and eat anything that he feels like it, i was just wandering if there was an tricks to encourage hunting and and yes i quarintine my feeders, sick feeders die from the move.

You can breed livebearers to feed him or other easily bred and cheap fish/shrimp. My little guy learned to hunt his tank mates all on his own, so can't help with that.

Even if if do you have healthy feeders and etc.... the nutrient value in a pellet over exceeds any feeder fish.
You could gutload your feeders with high quality food than feed them. just start small and he will hunt on his own. still ill-advised on going the feeder route... creates more aggression on your fish as well. I have a 15 inch endli living with my 3 inch seg., the only reason he has not chopped him up yet is because he has been strictly on pellets, and even after 5 days without food, he patiently waits on the pellets and doesnt make a quick lunch of my little segs.
