Is it alright to give aros squid?I just bought a 32 inch silver and the owner said that he only eats squid,handfeeding only. Or rats.What's your opinions?All aro experts please give me some advice,i've had him a 5 days and he wont eat prawns,krill or large feeders.

I feed mine squid strips about once a week, works great for me. I also feed hikari aro sticks, frogs, geckos, and occasional crickets.

I've seen some of your aros,they're grade A quality and you have really clean setups.This aro is huge he's about 32 inches long and at least 10 inches tall from bottom fin to top fin.So squid must work good.I seen the old owner feed him a big rat and that's when I knew I had to have him.

The question was raised regarding how fish digest bone and the like when feeding prawn that hasn't been prepared properly is potentially fatal. I've been thinking about this a lot recently and while trying to remove a python form my garden, which was in the process of swallowing a mouse, I came to the conclusion that fish, like arowana and other predators probably have very strong acids in their stomachs, which are able to digest bones of frogs, rats, small birds and of course other fishes.
The acids don't get to work on the bone until the pray is swallowed while a shrimp tail causes the damage on the way down.

but many people in my place testify that their aros died a few months after feeding them lizards.. their aro had a healthy appetite at first but after a few weeks, their appetite started to deteriorate and eventually refused to eat.. after a few months of not eating, their aros died.. when they opened it, found lizard bones particularly it's skull undigested.. my theory is the lizard's head is indigestible.. may not hold true to the rat but better be safe than sorry bro..

First of all, don't stress. Such a monster needs time to adapt to a new setting. Do not feed him for a couple of days. You are only stressing him.

let it go hungry.

On the rat, leave it for once a month. Aros are not highly eqquiped for the digestion of mammal protein.

The squid is okay ( although it spoils the water ), as is okay other strips of white fish, preferably fw fish.

I have tried also, with very good results, cubes of raw chicken ( you have to wash it very well in running water to take out that "gooish" stuff ). My monsters love it.

But foremost, be calm, and don't stress it. if it is healthy it will eat, even if it takes a lot of time ( and it looks as it has enough reserves with all that food it got at the previous owner ).

How about some pix?

they need time to adjust to there new surroundings.I know most fish don't eat right away,with the exception of aggressive cichlids.I just put this thread up because I didn't know if squid was bad for aros or not.Oh yeah and about the rat situation,i'm not gonna feed rats to my aro,I know it can be bad for them.It's fun to watch but I don't wanna take any chances with this monster.I'll try to get some pics,but I can't find my digital camera and my phone takes bad pics.Thanks everyone for the feedback.

I agree 100%, it is better to be safe than sorry. Especially when there are so many other high protien food available from the local market.
