ive had a Uaru since saturday nice little guy about 2" and hes got a little territory in a piece of hollow bamboo ornament facing away from the front and i havent gotten him to feed yet, i know hes new and it takes some getting used to as one of my other fish didnt feed for 2 weeks, but i dont want to loose him, is there any ways i can coax him out to go for the sinking food i feed to the bichir ?

if you guys have Uaru's were they like this at first,
id like to add the tank isnt done i just added the uaru first so he can establish a territory, i need dithers and stuff so would that encourage him out?

Uaru need other uaru in the tank at this size, or they will be shy and very skittish. it is very important to have more than one at this size or they can remain this way as adults.

for feeding, i have never seen a uaru refuse froozen bloodworm. drop some in, he'll smell/taste it in the water and come out for some. I feed my uarus hikari pellets(they accept anything hikari) bloodworm and romane lettuce.

Agreed, mine was pretty skittish until he hit 6-7" or so, I only had 1. They will eat most things though, hikari excel is nice for them because they like a bit more veggies in the diet than other SA cichlids tend to.

ive got hikari excel. its just the only other fish in there for the moment is a bottom feeding fish, so i dno if he would accept anything from the top.

I've been feeding mine Omega one pellets and a variety of frozen foods . The only thing that they (I have two) have turned their nose up at is frozen krill, other than that they eat whatever I give them. Not to hijack this thread but does anyone know if the Hikari spirulina brine shimp is worth bothering with for veggie suplementation? Mine like their veggies but go crazy for brine shrimp.

agree with the others get more but try to keep it to even numbers so aggression is dished out between pairs or the 2 that arent a pair.
its a tough little uaru that can refuse bloodworm, its their drug of choice. i found mine guarded their pieces of corgette (zuchinni) fiercely even against fish that had no interest and came to close. put a piece outside its cave. it will probably eat through the night.

im gonne try some various ideas, i think it ate some sinking pellets i put near his cave yday too, so when im 100% sure ive got him eating il let you know

edit*
i put a piece of runner bean in there last night and its gone now.
i just tried coaxing it with bloodworms and it ate a few but nowhere near as much as i thought, so maybe it ate the runnerbean last night?

its appetite will come. it has started eating which means it shouldnt waste away and that can only be a good thing. it will eat more when it settles a bit more.
the shyness will go faster if you get another one though.

thanks for the advice guys got it feeding on the sinking pellets earlier, really likes them. it flared up at the bichir and fended it off to eat the food so i think hes properly settled in, once again thanks guys il take some pics when he gets abit bigger
