I feed a main diet of hikari cichlid gold pellets but they have a color enhancing food I've been meaning to try called blood red parrot+ that's supposed to really bring out reds. I've also noticed that massivore and carnisticks tend to bring out reds in my other fish but they tend to smell a bit

90% of the time its genetics but food can help as well. Brine shrimp and krill work the best for red. Hikari, New spectrum is very good. Just feed a variety of diet and you'll be fine.

In my experience and I've had dozens of flowerhorn brine shrimp will pop a SRD. Feed it once a week and you should see results. You can get asathaxin powder from kens fish and mix it with your food as well. Thats the enzyme that causes the red coloration in fish. A natural way is brine shrimp though.

Makes perfect sense as I've notice krill and brine shrimp among the main ingredients in hikari foods

So you guys don't recommend like the humpy head and such?

The kok is mostly made up of fat so as long as you keep him well fed and he has the genes to retain fat in his kok it's should grow to a decent size. Yours is already off to a great start

Hikari pellets only. No problems with white string poop or bloat. Rather not risk health for color
