Maybe it is just me, but I have the hardest time believing anyone when they tell me that they have a wild peacock bass or they are getting one. Why would the LFS be getting in wild fish. I believe that they would be breaking some sort of a law. Now I'm not talking for the people where they are indeginous too cause obviously they could catch one and bring it home. I live in Connecticut and the closest place with wild peacock bass is 1500 miles away. Come on, if there was some little punk out there catching 2 - 3 inch bass and shipping them across the world for sale, they should be shot for taking a small fish out of where it is supposed to be. There are size limits for the fish you can take out and keep. I would be less likely to buy a fish from someone if they told me that it was wild, nevermind that in the back of my head I'd be calling the guy an ass for lying.

So if anyone wants to fill me in on the wild peacock bass that everyone claims to get. I would love to hear how this sytem of gettting the fish works.

Many fish in your LFS are wild caught because they can't be bred in captivity. Others that can be bred are sometimes wild caught as well.

Wild caught fish tend to be less succeptable to disease and sometimes have brighter or different coloration.

Wild fish are shipped in from other countries. Chances of your lfs having them are slim unless they purchase them from collectors/breeders. you can obtain many different wild fish at www.tangledupincichlids.com.

Let's use your peacock bass as an example. Two places they come from "wild caught" - South America and those that are breeding in FL. Chances are they are coming from SA. If that is true, the collectors have permits to collect, ship out of country, ship into country and then sell wholesale to pet stores.
Many of the 'rare' fish you see are wild caught or from large scale farms that might as well be 'the wild' with the size ponds they use.

Its only 1,400 miles from Hartford to Miami!!

come do some fishin'.

buying captive bred fish is more ecologically responsible than buying wild caught, though. IMO, that is one of the reasons fish that won't breed in captivity are commonly also 'rare'; they are overfished.

I'ive imported a few boxes of fish from Peru.

Wild Peacock Bass were available, often.. by the THOUSANDS.

When they spawn, they have THOUSANDS of fry.. they are easy to catch.

You can also order large ones to be caught with a line and pole.

Imported from Peru, to LAX, to the wholesaler, to the LFS, to your tank.

kthxbye.
