I work at a petsmart and yesterday this guy came in and said he was bored of his oscar and asked if we could take it, I told him that we weren't allowed to take em for the store and gave him a list of LFS that would, he said "Eh, I'm just gonna flush it". So I told him that I would take it and told him my hours for today. He showed up about 10 minutes before I had to leave and I saved the guy, good lookin Tiger Oscar right around 4.5-5". He's spending the night in a 20 gallon tote with airstones and a spare heater and tomorrow he will be going to the LFS as a donation.. Though the more I look at him the more attached I get haha who knows maybe some of my other fish will be taking the LFS trip :nilly::nilly::nilly:

The Pet Co in my area does have a spare fish tank for people to drop off unwanted fish into and the stores helps by putting the fish out for sale for a very low price so they can find homes. One of the people there said that they had someone drop off a fish that was over a foot long and couldn't even turn around in their fish tanks. A week or two later they sold the fish for $20 and found it a good new home.

I think this Pet Co idea sounds like a good idea on both ends.

Poor Oscar! Hard to believe someone would flush a live fish. :( I'm glad you saved him, and if you decide to keep him post pics and give him a witty name!

I'm surprpised that a corporate type chain store would have such a feature, the petsmart near me does not but I guess it could be a good thing.

PetSmart and PetCo are totally different store chains. Maybe the Petco's are independantly owned? Otherwise I don't see how they could even do something like having a 'drop - off' donatin tank! ? Never heard of any store having that before.

The thing I think BITES the most : You can report ppl who abuse animals to the Cops, and there's a price to pay for being cruel. But if you report someone for putting there perfectly healthy fish in the freezer, down the toilet, in the trash, etc., there's not a whole lot any one does about it. Burns my buns that ppl just off the cuff say to your face that they're just going to flush it! Sick, sick, sick....

Yes I'm aware that they are two different stores,we have both of them throughout the city.I typed one name while thinking about the other, whatever. They both probably have a similar corporate and policy structure.

I suspect that it's not uncommon or rare for people to drop off fish at pet co but it does happen. The last time I was there they had two three inch long fan tail Goldfish swimming around in a 40 gallon for two bucks eatch that someone had dropped off.

i saw a 4" lungfish at petco in a tank like that one time lol. at the time i thought it was some kind of tadpole. i wouldve bought it if i had known what it was back then. but yeah its good that petco has something like that.

good job on the fish-save

My Petco currently has a beautiful 6" male GT (nuchal hump and everything) in one of the planted tanks off by himself at the end. He has to have been a trade-in. My God, he is gorgeous.
