I was wondering what others feelings are on the use of undergravel filters.I have always had them in tanks ( with powerheads and hang behind filter) and have always been pleased with them. I have had a 46g bow front given to me never been set up so thats cool but i am not sure if they make special ugf for bow fronts.

As long as they are well maintained, UGFs can still be amazingly useful as long as one stocks sensible.

Also, no kuhlii loaches. They don't enjoy UGF maintenance.

I forgot, about the bowfront... an UGF will work even if it does not take up the entire footprint of the tank. Go ahead and fill in the part the UGF does not cover with gravel.

I think that they are great. Beneficial bacteria requires surface area to grow and thrive. UGF's utilize the surface area of the entire gravel bed. Couple this with a foam filter or power head with a foam attachment and you are good to go.

They work great with powerheads! They keep your tank smelling good and the water crystal clear! The BB thrives in the oxygenated gravel and the surface area of the gravel blows most canisters away! The only negatives are if you have fish that dig or want to use them in a planted tank as the roots get hung up in the filter plates. I like to use them when possible. They help out alot when you're stocking levels are on the high side.
